Biography

Jake Pierson is a clarinetist and educator based in Massachusetts. He is an active performer with the Boston Civic Orchestra and the Boston Annex Players Chamber Orchestra, and his playing has garnered praise for its technical precision, musical depth, and expressive nuance.  During his time in Indiana, he performed with the IU New Music Ensemble, Ballet Indiana, and a wide range of chamber ensembles. His collaborations included recording sessions for student films and premiering works by student composers, including Ben Reike’s Melting (2021) and Chloe Liuyan Liu’s Quotidian Dreams I (2022).

Mr. Pierson currently serves as Instructor of Aural Skills at Boston University and runs a clarinet studio at his home in Neponset. Before coming to Boston, he previously served as Associate Instructor of Clarinet at the Jacobs School of Music in Bloomington, Indiana. A dedicated educator, Mr. Pierson adopts a holistic approach to teaching that fosters the whole musician, integrating technical training and theory with an emphasis on musical expression. He has led masterclasses and workshops in public schools and currently teaches clarinet pedagogy at the University of New Hampshire.

Mr. Pierson’s accolades include first place in the 2019 University of New Hampshire Concerto Competition, where he performed Mozart’s Clarinet Concerto in A Major, K. 622 with the University Symphony Orchestra. He was also a finalist in the 2022 American Reed Summit Clarinet Competition, further establishing his reputation as a rising talent in the clarinet community.

Mr. Pierson holds a Bachelor of Music in Music Education from the University of New Hampshire, a Master of Music in Clarinet Performance from the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University, and is currently pursuing a Doctor of Musical Arts at Boston University. He has studied with renowned clarinetists Peter Bianca, Elizabeth Gunlogson, Howard Klug, and Rob Patterson.
